Learning from Multiculturalism

Hey guys!

This week I have being paying attention to the diversity that Toronto covers and I thought it could be a very interesting topic to introduce to you guys a little bit about my experience.

Toronto is famous for being one of the most multicultural cities in the world, composed for different types of people, origins and religions. Usually Brazilian students are well treated and in general they adapt themselves very quick at the Canadian culture. Its easy to feel at home in Toronto. Beyond to find several people who speaks your language, them all has some accent.

In this little while I had been in Toronto I already met and talked with a Chinese cleaner, a Greek manager, Indian taxi drivers, Turkish and Philippians attendants, beyond Mexicans and Colombians waiters. It's a world representation in just one city!

This cultural diversity has an explanation: More than a half of the population from around 2 million people, it's composed for visible minorities and the city has the biggest percentage of international residents in the world, being behind just Miami in US, accordance with the Canadian government. Over 140 languages and dialects are spoken here and at least 9 of them are more spoken than french, one of the official languages of the country.

The government doesn't encourage that exist a necessarily a Canadian culture and usually make sure to preserve the culture of each represented country in Toronto. In the public schools, for example, the classes are interrupted for the Muslim students can pray facing to Meca. Which is awesome! Every single culture receives their value in Toronto.

It's just magical be around other cultures and people. Having an open mind and embracing cultural diversity while studying abroad is a very exciting way to learn from other cultures and the world we live on. Just in case you're deciding to come to Toronto, keep on mind that it's one of the best knowledge you can get. It's important to understand and have empathy with other culture as much as learn English or even take a Diploma course. It's all about human being.
